Eco Book Club: World of Wonders: In Praise of Whale Sharks, Fireflies, and Other Astonishments by Aimee Nezhukumatathil

Due to ongoing renovations at Teaneck Library, the Eco Book Club will be held at Teaneck Creek Conservancy at 20 Puffin Way in Teaneck. This month, we will be holding our meeting outdoors in our Peace Labyrinth!

Join Eco Book Club hosted by Teaneck Creek Conservancy and Teaneck Public Library! Eco Book Club is a wonderful gathering of folks who share a love of nature and care for the earth. All are welcome to join in the friendly conversation at our monthly meetings or read along at home.

For the fourth month now, we're excited to begin our meeting out in nature! Join us at 6:30pm for an optional nature walk before the book discussion. We’ll take a mini-hike through Teaneck Creek Conservancy, exploring signs of hope in the world around us—whether it's new growth, wildlife returning, or the positive results of recent restoration efforts. It's a great way to connect with the themes of the book and experience nature firsthand.

Please remember to wear weather-appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear for the walk. Bring binoculars if you have them—though it won’t be a bird-focused walk, they could enhance your experience.

Then, at 7pm, we’ll gather for the book discussion in our Peace Labyrinth.

A New York Times bestseller and literary favorite, World of Wonders blends memoir, nature writing, and cultural reflection in a lyrical celebration of the natural world. From axolotls to narwhals, fireflies to touch-me-not plants, Nezhukumatathil draws on childhood memories across the U.S. and her Indian-Filipina heritage to explore how the creatures she loves have helped her navigate life’s beauty and adversity. Each short essay serves as an ode to wonder, reminding us to pay attention—to the strange, the small, and the astonishing. With illustrations by Fumi Nakamura, this collection is both a heartfelt homage to nature and a call to rediscover curiosity and care.

The Human Cosmos is about how our deep, ancient connection to the night sky shaped human civilization—and what we've lost by turning away from it. Jo Marchant traces our relationship with the stars across cultures and time, from Paleolithic cave art to Polynesian navigation and modern astrophysics. As artificial light and digital life obscure the cosmos, she argues that reconnecting with the sky can restore awe, meaning, and insight into what it means to be human.

Eco-Art Celebrates: Frog Compass

Eco-Art Celebrates: Frog Compass

Join artists Sylvana Dipre and Julius Minervini, along with students from Teaneck High School, the TCC Eco-Art Committee, and the Teaneck Creek Conservancy Board to celebrate the completion of the Frog Compass art installation with a community gathering, a meet-the-artists, and seniors from Teaneck High School band, directed by Lee Ann Newland,  will provide a brass fanfare for the event.

The Frog Compass began as repurposed metal debris pulled from the Conservancy and became a striking compass sculpture that reflects both the park’s history and its evolving future. Art students at Teaneck High School, guided by Jennifer Sinclair, selected Sylvana Dipre’s “Frog Compass” design to bring this vision to life as the newest installation in Teaneck Creek Park. Volunteers from Stonefield Engineering generously built the surrounding stone wall and viewing area, while students from Dwight-Englewood School, participating in community service, partnered with Sprout Farms & Gardens to design and plant the vibrant Compass Garden — a true testament to community collaboration.

The sculpture was supported in part by a grant from the NJ State Council on the Arts, administered by the Bergen County Department of Parks.

Meet at the Compass just past the southern intersection of the Green and Red Trails.

Free, but donations welcome. Light refreshments provided.

In The Story of a Black Mother's Garden, poet and scholar Camille T. Dungy reflects on a seven-year journey to diversify her garden in the mostly white community of Fort Collins, Colorado. When she and her family relocated there in 2013, the community enforced strict rules on what could and couldn’t be planted in residential gardens. In defiance of these restrictive, homogenous policies that stifled the potential and beauty of nature, Dungy uses the variety of plants, herbs, vegetables, and flowers she cultivates as a metaphor to argue how uniformity threatens the planet’s future. She also emphasizes the importance of fostering diverse, intersectional language in national environmental discussions as the key to its protection.

Eco Book Club: The Language of Trees: A Rewilding of Literature and Landscape by Katie Holten

Due to ongoing renovations at Teaneck Library, the Eco Book Club will be held at Teaneck Creek Conservancy at 20 Puffin Way in Teaneck.

Katie Holten's “The Language of Trees” is a visually striking exploration of the natural world, where art and language converge. Holten creates a unique "tree alphabet" to reimagine how we connect with trees and the environment. Through stunning illustrations and personal reflections, she invites readers to see trees not just as living beings, but as active participants in the world around us.

The book encourages a deeper connection with nature and fosters a renewed appreciation for the ecological importance of trees. By blending visual storytelling with a focus on environmental consciousness, Holten offers a fresh perspective on how we might communicate with and understand the natural world. *The Language of Trees* is both an artistic and poetic meditation on the beauty and fragility of trees.

Eco Book Club: Wintering: The Power of Rest and Retreat in Difficult Times by Katherine May

Due to upcoming renovations at Teaneck Library, the Eco Book Club will be held at Teaneck Creek Conservancy at 20 Puffin Way in Teaneck.

Wintering explores the profound experience of personal hardship, offering a thoughtful guide to navigating life's most difficult moments. Through a mix of personal storytelling and deep reflection, Katherine May shares her own journey of healing, showing how we can grow through times of struggle. By embracing solitude and drawing strength from nature, literature, and mythology, she uncovers the quiet, transformative power of the winter season.

This book invites readers to rethink adversity, framing it as an opportunity for renewal rather than a setback. May encourages us to embrace the stillness and subtle beauty that emerge during tough times, revealing how hardship can lead to hidden strengths and new beginnings. Wintering reminds us that, like nature's seasons, we too can find resilience and growth in the quietest of moments.

Eco Book Club: The Future We Choose: Surviving the Climate Crisis by Christiana Figueres

Due to upcoming renovations at Teaneck Library, the Eco Book Club will be held at Teaneck Creek Conservancy at 20 Puffin Way in Teaneck.

A cautionary but optimistic book about the world’s changing climate and the fate of humanity, from Christiana Figueres and Tom Rivett-Carnac–who led negotiations for the United Nations during the historic Paris Agreement of 2015.
The authors outline two possible scenarios for our planet. In one, they describe what life on Earth will be like by 2050 if we fail to meet the Paris Agreement’s climate targets. In the other, they lay out what it will be like to live in a regenerative world that has net-zero emissions. They argue for confronting the climate crisis head-on, with determination and optimism.
The Future We Choose presents our options and tells us what governments, corporations, and each of us can, and must, do to fend off disaster. (Provided by publisher.)
