A cautionary but optimistic book about the world’s changing climate and the fate of humanity, from Christiana Figueres and Tom Rivett-Carnac–who led negotiations for the United Nations during the historic Paris Agreement of 2015.
The authors outline two possible scenarios for our planet. In one, they describe what life on Earth will be like by 2050 if we fail to meet the Paris Agreement’s climate targets. In the other, they lay out what it will be like to live in a regenerative world that has net-zero emissions. They argue for confronting the climate crisis head-on, with determination and optimism. The Future We Choose presents our options and tells us what governments, corporations, and each of us can, and must, do to fend off disaster. Between 2020 and 2022, Teaneck Creek Park underwent a remarkable ecological transformation:

• A new 20-acre freshwater wetlands park was established within this Bergen County Park

• Significant habitat and ecological improvements were achieved

The Next Chapter

Building on this success, we're ready to take the park to new heights. The Bergen County Department of Parks has partnered with the renowned landscape architecture firm, MKW+ Associates, to further enhance your park experience.

What's in Store?

MKW+ Associates has crafted an innovative conceptual plan focused on:

• Enhancing the overall visitor experience

• Improving the existing trail network

• Proposing exciting focal points such as bird blinds and gathering spaces

This month’s book is Under the Sea-Wind, the ‘stunning’ literary debut by renowned environmentalist and nature writer, Rachel Carson.  What began as a government fisheries brochure, Under the Sea-Wind evolved into ‘an intimate account of the intricacies of maritime ecology’, tracing the lives and interactions of over a dozen sea and shore creatures. This book is one of Carson’s personal favorites and is ‘a timeless and unforgettable portrait of the awe-inspiring nature world’.

This is our last meeting for the summer. We’ll reconvene in September.

Flight Paths: How a Passionate and Quirky Group of Pioneer Scientists Solved the Mystery of Bird Migration’ covers the amazing story of ‘how we know what we know about bird migration’ from bird banding to genetic sequencing and space-based tracking systems. Rebecca makes complex research understandable as she highlights chapter by chapter the scientists who track this annual natural phenomenon.

This month’s book is Christian Cooper’s Better Living through Birding, an invitation into the wonderful world of birds, and what they can teach us about life, if only we would stop and listen. Christian Cooper is a self-described Blerd (Black nerd), an avid comics fan, and an expert birder who devotes every spring to gazing upon the migratory birds that stop to rest in Central Park.  Cooper tells the story of his extraordinary life leading up to the now-infamous encounter in Central Park and shows how a life spent looking up at the birds prepared him, in the most uncanny of ways, to be a gay, Black man in America today.

Explore TCC through the seasons on a walk with George Tsapellas and participate in community science by learning how to document what you see on your phone using iNaturalist or Seek. Each month will highlight a different part of the park, focusing on specific habitats and plants.

George is an avid user of iNaturalist and has been cultivating knowledge about local plants and wildlife for many years.

Prior to the program, install the iNaturalist app on your phone, create an account, and join Teaneck Creek Conservancy under “Projects”.
